Chicago P.D. Halstead Actor Leaving in Season 10

In an emotionally charged episode of “Chicago P.D.,” fans witnessed a significant shift within the Intelligence Unit as Det. Jay Halstead, portrayed by Jesse Lee Soffer since the first season, made his departure from Chicago and his spouse, Hailey Upton, played by Tracy Spiridakos. This marked Soffer’s confirmed exit from the series.

Viewers can catch “Chicago P.D.” on Wednesdays at 10/9c on NBC and the following day on Peacock.

Soffer’s decision to leave the show after a decade was shrouded in mystery until he disclosed his reasons to Variety in February 2023, revealing he felt it was time for a new chapter at the conclusion of Season 9.

As for Halstead, his exit came in Season 10, Episode 3, under intense circumstances. The episode showcased Halstead and Upton tackling a robbery case that turned personal for Halstead. A veteran named Lenny was killed during a pharmacy burglary linked to meth production, and Halstead, also a veteran, chose to conduct his own investigation to shield Lenny’s family and reputation. This led to a confrontation at a meth lab where Halstead, in a dire situation, fatally wounded a suspect and was left in a state of shock. Choosing to preserve his integrity, Halstead resigned, later explaining to Upton that he accepted a job overseas with the military, seeking clarity and purpose away from the moral complexities of police work.

Showrunner Gwen Sigan shared insights with NBC Insider about the thoughtful approach to crafting Halstead’s departure, emphasizing the desire to honor his character’s journey by allowing him to choose his path, reflective of his military background and moral compass.

Jesse Lee Soffer’s announcement to leave “Chicago P.D.” came in August 2022, with his final appearance slated for the 10th season. He expressed gratitude to the fans, cast, and crew for a decade of support. In February 2023, Soffer elaborated on his departure, citing a desire for personal and professional growth and acknowledging the difficulty of the decision given his connection to the show and its audience.

Regarding a potential return for Halstead, both Soffer and Sigan hinted at the possibility, emphasizing the open-ended nature of his exit.

Halstead’s decision to leave impacts not only his character but also Voight, his mentor, and Upton, his wife. Voight, played by Jason Beghe, must confront the consequences of his influence on Halstead, while Upton faces the challenge of navigating her grief and duty in his absence. Sigan pointed out the evolving dynamics within the team, particularly between Voight and Upton, as they grapple with their roles and relationships in the wake of Halstead’s departure.

As the series progresses, Upton’s journey will explore themes of loss, resilience, and the pursuit of justice, underscoring the profound effects of Halstead’s exit on her character and the Intelligence Unit as a whole.
